Versiunea in engleza: 46 Million Batteries in Nokia Phones Found Faulty JEDDAH, 15 August 2007 — About 46 million batteries used in different models of Nokia mobile phones globally were found to be faulty resulting in overheating, the company announced yesterday. The overheating occurs while the batteries are being charged. The company said it has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging causing the battery to dislodge. The Finnish company advised customers to be on the watch while charging them. The world’s leading maker of mobile phones also said it would offer free replacements for the defective batteries after around 100 incidents of overheating were reported worldwide. Nokia mobile users can check the 26-character serial number on the back of their batteries to compare it with the identification numbers on the Nokia website ( www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement ) or by contacting a local Nokia call center. No serious property damage or injuries were reported as a result of the incidents, the company said. Japan’s Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. manufactured the batteries in question. Nokia said it was working closely with Matsushita to investigate the problem. Nokia is also negotiating with Matsushita over who would bear the costs. Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries who have collectively produced more than 300 million such products. The Nokia statement said the problem concerned only the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. After the revelation of the faulty batteries, Nokia users in the Kingdom were a worried lot. Some tried to find out whether the battery in their set was faulty, and if so, how to replace them. Others had no clue about it and when Arab News informed them about the battery problem, they panicked and started checking their batteries. In the spur of the moment, Nokia user Fadhel Muhammad opened his mobile set to find out his battery’s serial number, which turned out to be safe, but in the confusion, he forget the pin code, landing him in another trouble. But his colleague, Khalilur Rahman, was not so lucky. When he checked the serial number of his Nokia battery, it turned out to be among the faulty lot. “Immediately, I switched off my mobile. I am not going to charge it now. I will try to find out with the local Nokia dealer whether it can be replaced. Unless the battery is changed, I will not use my mobile,” said Khalil. Many phone users in Saudi Arabia bought their phones from small independent dealers and have no idea if these dealers will honor the company’s advice. These dealers may not even be aware of the recall. “Nokia is a very popular brand available in all shops,” said Jeddah resident Khalid Bazitpuri. “I purchased Nokia N70 from one shop, which is not its dealer. Now the shopkeeper said that I have to go to an authorized agent to sort this out.” One Nokia user said that the problem would definitely affect the sale of the most popular mobile on the market. “I think this will hurt Nokia’s sales a lot,” Zaheer Kamal said. Nokia shares were down 24 cents or 0.79 percent at $30.34 yesterday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange. Its European shares closed down 1.55 percent, helping nudge the DJ European technology index down 0.84 percent. sursa articolului in engleza : http://news.google.com
